Air filters: When should you check them?

Check your air filter every time you get your electric bill. Many filters you buy in the store will claim to last 3 or 6 months…don’t believe it! Once you learn the tendencies of the dust in your house, you can adjust how often you check. On average, 30-40% of insufficient cooling calls can be contributed to dirty filters or dirty coils (which is accelerated by having a dirty filter).

Pleated filters are good if you maintain a very clean filter. However, once pleated filters get slightly dirty, they can cause air-flow problems.

What does SEER mean?

This stands for seasonal energy efficiency rating. It’s the efficiency rating for A/C equipment. This is like mpg on your car. The higher the SEER the more efficient the A/C system is and the more savings you’ll see on energy bills.

When’s the best time to service my A/C system?

It’s a good idea to have your A/C system serviced in the spring. This could save you costly and inconvenient breakdowns in the summer. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and insured.

How do I know if my system needs more freon?

The average A/C unit holds 7-10 lbs of refrigerant (freon). Be leery of someone that tells you your unit needs to be charged with 12 pounds or more. They may be pulling a fast one on you. Also, be sure they weigh in the refrigerant with a scale to ensure you’re being charged fairly.
